Railway Station

During the Austro-Hungarian period, a railway station was built in Čapljina. Construction began by connecting the north and the sea, more precisely by building the narrow-gauge railway line Sarajevo - Ploče. According to newspaper reports, the first works on the construction of the narrow-gauge railway section (0.76 m) from the port of Metković to Čapljina, with a length of 42.4 km, began in September 1884 and were completed in June 1885. The construction lasted about ten months, and the works were carried out by the company of Karl V. Schwarz from Vienna. Traffic on the line, according to the decision of the Provincial Government, was entrusted to a special administration in Mostar.

History

First Mention

Čapljina is first mentioned under its name in 1475 in Turkish documents as Merza Čapljina, deserted, and the second mention dates from 1632, when Čapljina as a village belonged to the Mostar kadiluk. Between 1782 and 1880, it belonged to Počitelj, and together with it to Stolac. After the construction of the railway in 1885, it economically rose. Its first urban plan was received in 1962. Its oldest part, Gradina, is still from the Turkish period and has an oriental as well as a Herzegovinian touch. The Austro-Hungarian period left its mark in the form of solid buildings with ornaments on the facade that today represent architectural value that should be protected.
