The tournament is named after Andrija Anković (1937 – 1980), a footballer born in Gabela, who spent most of his career at Hajduk Split, where he gained the status of one of the more legendary players. He was also a representative of the former Yugoslavia.
Due to the war events in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the tournament was not held from 1992 to 1996, after which it was restarted and has been held continuously to this day.
This is the oldest active football tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which numerous well-known clubs from the region have participated over the years, such as Hajduk, Dinamo, Zrinjski, Široki Brijeg, Velež, Osijek, and many others.
Throughout the history of the tournament, clubs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and the wider region have participated and won, with Hajduk Split, Zrinjski Mostar, Dinamo Zagreb, and Sutjeska Nikšić standing out as multiple winners.
For NK GOŠK, this tournament holds special value as it not only brings together quality teams but also represents the continuation of Gabela's sports tradition and preserves the memory of Andrija Anković and his contribution to football.
